Solar photovoltaic (PV) panels are here to stay. Photovoltaics are a way of generating electrical power by converting solar radiation into direct current electricity. The initial purchase of Solar panels for your home can operate successfully for many years and needs very little maintenance after set up. Basically after a fairly large out lay – may be eight to nine thousand pounds, you will have extremely low operating costs compared to your current system.

Solar photovoltaics are a fast growing system with more than a hundred countries involved in the installations. It’s worth noting that Solar power for your home are pollution free while it’s being used and emissions are easily managed. You might think that the drizzly UK doesn’t get sufficient sunshine to work solar panels on your home roof – think again! Believe it or not we have only about one third less sunshine than the south of Spain or Italy. It may not feel as though sunlight’s in evidence, but it’s up there doing its job somewhere and it could do a lot of good if you direct it onto solar panels for your home!

Using mobility equipment on public transport has become quite easy due to the advancement of technology in this regards. The purpose of any mobility device is to provide ease of use and convenience so whether you are indoors or outdoors it should contribute to help you in your movement. These devices enable you to do more things on your own without seeking help from others.

Most of the public transport available in developed countries is fully equipped and provides facilities to users with physical disabilities. There are generally specific seating arrangements for disabled people on buses, tubes and trains. Other than that there are spaces within the transport vehicle where you can park your wheelchairs and mobility scooters. For instance if you are travelling in public transport like bus then most of the buses are equipped with offering seating arrangement to at least one physically challenged passenger. Other than that there are hand rails and hand grabs on public transport to provide more comfort to individuals who have less severe mobility issues. Therefore, mobility devices contribute a lot to the independence of individuals who face mobility issues.

If you don’t have your own transport and it is your requirement to travel via public transport still you can use such equipment as most forms of public transport nowadays offers special arrangements for disabled passengers.

Wind is increasingly becoming a popular source of energy that is used to generate electricity. We can harness the power of wind to generate a renewable form of energy, which is a good alternative to the conventional form of energy produced by coal and other fossil fuels. It is also the cleanest source of renewable energy on the earth. The most common way of getting energy from the wind is through setting up ‘Wind farms’. Certainly the number of wind farms in the UK is steadily increasing.
The main advantage of wind power is that the wind is available free of cost, and with the use of modern technology it is possible to capture the wind efficiently. Wind power production is lot more economical than other forms of energy. After the initial purchase of the wind turbines, there are no more substantial costs involved, except for general maintenance. Initial costs of setting up wind farms have fallen over the years, and consequently the cost of getting electricity from the wind has dropped considerably.
Wind power enables electricity to be produced in an environmentally friendly way – once the wind farm is built; the energy it produces doesn’t contribute to the exhaust of deadly pollutants, which cause the green house effect.
Although wind turbines can be very tall, they take up less space than the average power station. As each turbine takes up only a small area of land, the ground on which the turbines are positioned can still be used for agricultural purposes. If the turbines need to be taken down, there are no residues left behind and no damage to the environment.
Wind turbines are available in a range of sizes in order to support varying population levels, a vast range of people and businesses can use them. Wind power can be generated at remote locations, such as mountain communities and remote countryside, where it is impossible to get an electricity power grid. They can use wind power to generate their own supply of electricity.
Many people even consider wind farms an interesting feature of the landscape.
While there are a number of clear advantages of wind power; we also need to consider the potential effect wind farms could have on the surrounding environment. In fact, environmental effects of wind power have been the subject of a number of studies.
Wind turbines generally produce a lot less electricity than the average fossil fuelled power station, therefore multiple wind turbines are required in order to make an impact. The wind farms generally have to be positioned on hills to get the maximum benefits of the wind. This has led to concerns from some people who are worried about wind farms being positioned in their local area. They are worried that the appearance of the turbines will ruin the landscape and the natural beauty of the countryside.
We also need to consider noise pollution, the noise generated from turbines has been criticised by some people who live very close to the wind farms.
Wind turbine construction can be very costly to surrounding wildlife during the build process. The RSPB recognise that wind farms are a threat to birds, including golden eagles whose grouse prey could be scared from the area affected by turbines. Prevention and mitigation of wildlife fatalities affect the site and operation of wind turbines.
The construction of wind farms and the enormous wind turbine foundations has the potential to disrupt water flow to many shallow water wells. On the construction site, the use of gasoline or hydraulic oil could cause contamination if there was a spillage. Many wells could be destroyed and many homes could be left without clean water.
In addition, there are concerns over the potential fire risks involved; some people are concerned over the possibility of wind turbines igniting a wild fire.
Some argue that wind farms can be costly to maintain and electricity produced by this method is more expensive than that produced by other means. As such, they argue the money would be better invested in energy conservation.

In the world we live in today we greatly depend on many energy resources and as the population of the world rises, people will need more energy for living. The main energy resources we currently use include coal, natural gas, oil and nuclear energy. Even though our energy demands depend highly on these resources, much of the energy used is being depleted. There are great concerns for the future with an inevitable shortage of these resources for future generations. In addition, use of these energy sources is associated with various environmental problems.

Sustainable energy is the provision of energy to meet the needs of the current population without compromising the needs of future generations. A sustainable energy resource is a resource that is used up at the same speed that it is renewed. In general, sustainable energy sources are usually considered to be renewable and not limited considering a long term perspective. They include sources such as solar, wind, hydroelectric, biomass and geothermal energy sources. They usually also include technologies that improve energy efficiency.

Most people who are concerned about our future appreciate the importance of sustainable energy. Research into these alternative sustainable energy sources is ongoing.
Clearly the main benefit of using sustainable energy sources is the fact that they are renewable and will not run out. A second advantage to alternative energy sources are that they are seen as being environmentally friendly. This is because they do not emit carbon dioxide, which is the biggest contributor to global warming, into the atmosphere.

Each individual alternative energy source comes with its own associated benefits. Solar energy technologies for instance promise to improve our air quality, support out economy, and increase energy security. Wind energy is a clean, domestic energy source that is competitive with conventional fuel sources. Innovative technologies using waves, currents and tides generate electricity from water and are seen as being very clean with no waste involved. Geothermal energy provides electricity and efficient heating and cooling by trapping the heat within the earth.

Development into utilizing alternative energy technologies deserves considerable attention. At present, however, it is not wholly possible mainly due to economical reasons and/or some natural conditions. Solar panels for instance are expensive and Governments are not all willing to buy home generated electricity. In addition, not all climates are suitable for solar panels. Wind turbines are also expensive and as wind does not blow constantly, they have to be part of a bigger plan. Hydro power involves the building of dams across river mouths; these are costly and risk disruption to the natural environment. There is evidence to also suggest they have also caused earthquakes. When considering geothermal energy, it is difficult to drill down as much as 2-3 metres into the earth. Finally, bio-fuel often uses crops to produce the bio-alcohol energy source. Not only does this mean that even more land will have to be cleared in order to grow more crops for food, or food will become more expensive as a result.

Following environmental and economic motivations, most countries in the world are confronting the challenge of reducing both their dependence on fossil fuels and their greenhouse gas emissions. The promotion of renewable energy sources contributes to these two goals.

Spanish governments have acknowledged the benefits of renewable energies and as such Spain is currently undergoing a renewable energy revolution. They have implemented a framework effective in encouraging the deployment of some renewable energy technologies such as solar power and wind power.

A Spanish renewable energy policy was introduced to pursue their objective of a sustainable, competitive and secure supply of energy. Their mission is to promote energy efficiency and the rational use of energy in Spain; to promote the diversification of energy sources and the increasing use of renewable energies and to foster these activities through technical consultancy and the implementation of innovative projects. Recommendations to help them to reach their goal include decarbonisation of the energy sector, increase on the research and technology transfer on energy, promotion of energy conservation and energy interconnections.

The renewable energy targets are calculated as the share of renewable consumption to gross final energy consumption. Renewable energy consumption comprises the direct use of renewable, such as bio fuels, plus the part of electricity and heat that is produced from renewable, for instance wind power and hydro power. The final energy consumption is the energy that households and industries etc use.
Spain as a whole has the target of generating 30% of its electricity needs from renewable energy sources by 2010, with 15% coming from wind power. Spain is the world’s fourth biggest producer of wind power. Wind energy has consolidated as the third technology of the Spanish power system in 2009. In January 2009 the total electricity demand produced with renewable energy sources had reached 34.8%.
Spain was the first country in the world to require the installation of photovoltaic electricity generation (solar panels) in new buildings. They were the second in the world to require the installation of solar hot water systems.
Some regions of Spain lead Europe in the use of renewable energy technology and plan to reach 100% renewable energy generation in the forthcoming years. Extremadura and Castilla-La Mancha are two regions in Spain which have managed to fulfill their 2006 electricity demand, free of CO2 gas emissions.
Renewable energy policies benefit from a number of support mechanisms. Two examples of such mechanisms include, while there is a feed-in tariff or a premium price paid on top of the market price, there is a possibility that a cap and floor mechanism for the premium could be considered. Secondly, low-interest loans that cover up to 80% of the reference costs are now available.

Solar Power from the sun has been a source of energy that dates back to ancient times. As early as 400BC the ancient Greek and Native Americans built their homes into hill sides, taking advantage of the heat storage from the sun. The Romans took their knowledge of the sun being a source of energy and used glass windows to trap the warmth from the sun in their homes. They were the first to build glass houses to grow plants and seeds.
In 1776 the first solar power collector was built and this attracted a great deal of interest in the scientific community throughout the 19th century. It was during the 1880’s that the first light converting photovoltaic cells were built. It was not long after this, in 1891, that the first commercial solar water heater was patented.
Developments in solar power were slower during the early 20th century. Solar power saw a rebirth, however, in the 1970’s, with the oil restrictions in force at this time, it was a great opportunity to utilize solar power. In the 1990’s we saw an even more mainstream interest in solar power. With the rising costs of oil and petroleum products, solar power was seen as a great alternative and during the 1990’s over one million homes had some form of solar power installed.
Today solar energy is used in a couple different ways. The first is the photovoltaic conversion format, otherwise known as solar panels. These panels are used to create electricity directly from the sun. They can be used alone or can be used in conjunction with other power resources. The second type of solar power is thermal solar power, which is where the sun is used to heat fluids, which then powers turbines or other types of machinery.
One of the main advantages of solar power is that the energy source is completely renewable. We can rely on the sun to provide us with more energy and light.
Although solar panels or solar lights may be expensive to buy, the initial investment is a small price to pay when considering the money that can be saved in the long run on electricity bills.
Solar energy is non-polluting; a further advantage of a solar power system for your home is the lack of pollution given off by the solar panels when generating electricity.
The solar cells are totally silent; they can extract energy from the sun without making any noise. In addition, they require very little maintenance and they last a long time. Solar powered lights and other solar powered products are also very easy to install and there are no wires involved in their installation.
There are increasingly easier and cheaper methods available to enable us to produce solar power for the home. Newer technologies, for instance, have enabled us to store the solar electricity produced though the use of solar power battery chargers.
Advantages of solar energy include the ability to supply power to some of the most remote places on earth. A great example of this is the huge difference solar power has made to mountain communities where it is difficult to construct power lines.
The sun will always be a super source of power and with the improvement of technology, the ability to harness this solar power will become even greater and more widespread in its use.

Recycling is a very important part of our modern day living and it is an excellent way we can all contribute to conserving our environment and saving energy.
The importance of recycling is two-fold. Recycling is not only critical as waste has a huge negative impact on our natural environment but it is also essential to cities all around the world and to people living in them.
In the current material world that we live in, we are fast using up the earth’s precious resources. There are so many products that we take for granted, but in actual fact the materials used to make many of these products are actually in short supply and we will run out of them naturally before long. As such, it makes sense to recycle.
There is also the energy implication, in most cases re-using materials through recycling uses much less energy than going through the whole process of creating them from beginning to end.

These days we can recycle almost anything! In fact up to 60% of our household rubbish can be recycled. There is still a great deal of waste, however, which could be recycled that ends up in landfill sites which is harmful to the environment. Recycling reduces air pollution (from incineration) and water pollution (from land filling) by reducing the need for “conventional” waste disposal.
If recycling was made easier and people were educated more on the subject of recycling, it is believed 9 out of 10 people would recycle more. There are many sources available providing advice and guidance on the subject of recycling so we can all improve our recycling efforts and help to eliminate the culture of just throwing things away. By adopting simple practices we can all help to make a difference.
The important things to remember about recycling is what materials can be recycled and what is the correct method in which to recycle it. Recyclable materials include many kinds of glass, paper, metal, plastic, textiles, and electronics.
As well as home recycling bins, such as for paper and glass, there are many recycling banks across the UK that can be used to recycle different materials. In addition, we can support recycling in other ways such as by buying recycled products.

There are different kinds of pollution that contribute to global warming. In general, any substance that people introduce into the atmosphere that has a damaging effect on the environment and to living things is considered air pollution.
Carbon dioxide, a greenhouse gas, is widely considered to be a pollutant when associated with cars, planes, power plants and other human activities that involve the burning of fossil fuels such as gasoline and natural gas. It is the main pollutant that is warming earth.

Another greenhouse gas that has a deteriorating effect on the earth’s ozone layer is methane. This is released from sources such as swamps and the gas emitted by livestock. Chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) once used in refrigerators and aerosol propellants have now been banned due to the pollution associated with using them.
Another pollutant associated with climate change is sulfur dioxide, a component of smog.

It is known to be the primary cause of acid rain. Industrialized countries have been working towards reducing the levels of sulfur dioxide, smog and the smoke they produce. As a result, however, there is evidence to suggest that the lower sulfur dioxide levels may actually be making global warming worse. Reducing the amount of sulfur dioxide in the atmosphere lets more sunlight through, warming the earth and this effect is made worse when levels of other greenhouse gases in the atmosphere trap the additional heat.

The effects of climate changes are significant and can be seen in the UK and around the world. UK temperatures, including those of British coastal waters, have already risen. Globally, continuing global warming means that extreme weather events such as severe floods, droughts and tropical storms are likely to become more frequent and dangerous. All of which have a negative impact on humans, animals and plants.

As temperatures increase and rainfall patterns change many animals and plant species around the world will be threatened. For instance, some species might be unable to adapt quickly enough and 30% of land-living species are at risk of extinction, should temperatures continue to increase. Crop yield is expected to drop a lot in Africa, the Middle East and India. Water availability for irrigation and drinking will be less predictable due to the variations in rainfall. There is also the risk that salt from rising sea levels may contaminate underground fresh water supplies in coastal areas.

The costs involved in climate change are expected to be huge. The Association of British Insurers estimates that UK households will see a continued increase in insurance costs due to extreme weather events.

We have used running water as an energy source for thousands of years; in the early years this was mainly to grind corn. Cragside House, in Northumberland, England, in 1878 was the very first house to be lit by electricity produced by hydro power. Soon after, in 1882 on the Fox River, in the USA, there was enough water and power to generate sufficient electricity to light a house and two paper mills. Nowadays, there are many hydro power stations, producing around 20% of the world’s electricity.

Hydro energy is a renewable energy source as it follows the water cycle of evaporation, condensation and precipitation. As long as there is water, there will be an energy source.
Hydro power stations are usually constructed from a simple system design which has proven to be reliable over time. These are designed to last many years and can contribute to the production of electricity for many decades to come.
The main advantage of the hydro power system is the elimination of the cost of fuel. Once a dam is constructed, the hydro energy generated is virtually free. Hydro power stations are generally heavily automated and have few personnel on site during normal operation, therefore labour costs also tends to be low.
Hydro power is extremely efficient, is more reliable than wind, solar or wave power and electricity can be generated constantly.
If electricity is not needed at any time, the sluice gates can be shut to stop the generation of electricity. The build up of water in the lake means that energy can be stored above the dam ready to cope with peaks in demand, when the water is released to produce electricity. A great benefit is the ability for hydro-electric power stations to increase to full power very quickly, unlike other power stations.
Another main advantage is that hydro power is very clean. The dam systems do not produce any greenhouse gases, there is no waste and they do not pollute the atmosphere. In addition they do not cause any noise pollution.
Micro-hydro systems are a miniature version of hydroelectric systems. These are ideal for remote sites where water is available a long distance from power needs.
A final benefit is that often large dams have become tourist attractions. The lake that forms behind the dam is ideal for leisure activities such as water sports.

Fossil fuels generally include coal, oil and gas which have formed through natural resources such as the decomposition of buried dead organisms. Fossil fuels are non-renewable resources because they take millions of years to form.

Coal is a solid fossil fuel formed over millions of years by the decay of land vegetation. Over time, successive layers of vegetation become buried, compacted and heated. This process leads to the deposits turning into coal. Coal is widely used in the generation of electricity and is a highly concentrated energy source.
Oil is formed from the decay of marine micro organisms deposited on the sea floor. As the micro animal and plant remains accumulate over millions of years, they gradually infiltrate the microscopic cavities of the sea floor sediment and rock where they decay. The resulting oil remains trapped in these spaces, forming oil reserves which can be extracted through large drilling platforms. Gas is produced in very much the same way as oil.

The main concerns associated with fossil fuels are the environmental pollution issues and the effects on global warming. Burning coal produces more carbon dioxide than burning oil or gas. It also produces sulphur dioxide, an acidic gas that contributes to the formation of acid rain. One of the main problems associated with acid rain is the effects it has on deforestation. Acid rain weakens trees by damaging their leaves, limiting the nutrients available to them, or exposing them to toxic substances slowly released from the soil. Eventually this leads to the destruction of the trees and resulting in damage to the quality of the land.

Deforestation is also often caused through the clearing of forests on a large scale for oil and coal mining exploitation. Often the requirement for land for a big opencast coal projects are quite large and much of the forest area are converted into a mining field. Consequently, large forest areas are deforested to make a way for large opencast coal mines.

There are many negative effects on the environment from de-forestation. The most dramatic impact is the loss of habitat for millions of species. Deforestation also drives climate change. Forest soils are moist, but without trees to protect them from the sun they can dry out very quickly. Trees also play a role in the water cycle by returning water vapor back into the atmosphere. Without trees to fill these roles, many forest lands can become desert lands. Trees also play a critical role in absorbing the greenhouse gases that contribute to global warming. If there are fewer forests, larger amounts of greenhouse gases will enter the atmosphere, increasing the effects of global warming.
